Life in Berlin

Berlin is one of the most exciting cultural centers in Germany and in Europe. There are countless things to do and places to visit, and students will never be short of cultural events, concerts, exhibitions, markets, fairs, and festivals to attend while living in Berlin.

Home to a stunning collection of museums, “Museum Island” (Museumsinsel) is located near the Akademie. Spanning this collection of museums is an incredibly diverse assortment of exhibitions, ranging from rare antiquities to contemporary art. Berlin is proudly home to internationally-renowned concert halls, theatres, and clubs, and boasts thousands of bars, cafes and restaurants which offer an array of cuisines and regional specialties;

Additionally, Berlin is home to three large opera houses: the Staatsoper Berlin (home to the Staatskapelle and located directly across from the Akademie), the Komische Oper, and the Deutsche Oper. The Konzerthaus (home to the Konzerthausorchester) is located very near to the Akademie, in Gendarmenmarkt, and the Philharmonie (home to the Berliner Philharmoniker) can be found in Potsdamer Platz, alongside a chamber music hall and music instrument museum.

Up-to-date event listings for a wide range of events, performances, and exhibitions can be found in the weekly event magazines available at any newsagents.
