WELCOME TO THE WEBSITE OF THE BARENBOIM-SAID AKADEMIE!
GREETINGS FROM THE RECTOR
Since 2016, the state-recognized Barenboim-Said Akademie has been teaching talented young musicians, primarily from the Middle East and North Africa, in the pedagogical spirit of Edward Said and Daniel Barenboim. In addition to intensive study in music theory and performance, each program also features study in the humanities. Students learn to listen to each other and develop their own ideas within a broad, interdisciplinary, and transcultural educational setting. Our goal is to educate musically excellent, curious, and reflected individuals.
The faculty of our Akademie is comprised of world-renowned artists. In addition to the bachelor's degree, an Artist Diploma can be obtained in all orchestral instruments as well as piano and composition. The Artist Diploma is designed as a post-graduate certificate program for advanced musicians who are preparing to embark on a performance career. A master's program for all main musical subjects mentioned above is planned to start in fall 2023.
The Barenboim-Said Akademie is also a lively place for artistic and intellectual exchange. Thanks to the musical programs in the Pierre Boulez Hall, designed by Frank Gehry, and a variety of lectures, symposia and other events, the Akademie is a place for international encounter and debate.
In addition to its own considerable resources, the Barenboim-Said Akademie is institutionally funded by the German government. The Federal Foreign Office provides scholarships for students enrolled in the Akademie’s degree programs. The State of Berlin has leased the landmark building to the Barenboim-Said Akademie for 99 years. Since 2017, the Akademie, the Pierre Boulez Saal and the West Eastern Divan Orchestra, from which it all began in 1999, have been working together under one roof on Französische Straße in Berlin-Mitte.
We appreciate your interest in the Barenboim-Said Akademie.
